Permits required for some pools above ground
Portsmouth residents who erect above-ground swimming pools capable of holding more than 24 inches of water must obtain required permits from the Portsmouth Department of Permits and Inspections. Above-ground pools that require a permit range from the inflatable types sold at retail stores to those that are custom built.

Trading Spouses is not about sex at all. So what really is being traded, if not spouses? "Class." The new television taboo. The show places rural, working-class, plus-size women in the McMansions of their blonde, thin, urban socialite counterparts, who find themselves in ranch houses with above-ground pools (horrors!) and shared bathrooms. Trading Spouses would like us to think that these obvious economic imbalances are balanced in other ways: After all, money can't buy you love; poverty doesn't promise authenticity. There's Tammy, for example, the former waitress (now wealthy matron) who exploits her mother-in-law as a servant and then has the gall to yap on and on about the "positive attitude" she brings to every occasion. There's Lisa, the loud-mouthed, unemployed hygienist who remin...

Joe Ordini, who sold toys, appliances and, most famously, above- ground swimming pools during a long career as a Paterson merchant, died Monday. He was 89 and lived in Franklin Lakes.
Ordini established what is now Joe Ordini's Pools & Spas at 745 River St., in Paterson's Riverside neighborhood, in the early 1960s. By then, the Eastside High baseball and football star was already a seasoned entrepreneur.

Work is scheduled to begin later this month on a high school for Carson students at the site of a Long Beach warehouse once used to store rubber and produce above-ground pools and spas.
While the school has yet to win plaudits from neighbors or the two cities, it would reduce crowding at maxed-out Carson High and Banning High in Wilmington.

I am a homeowner in an homeowners association that recently emerged developer control. Some of the homeowners have added fences, above-ground pools and large sheds without getting approval from the association. Many of these changes do not appear to meet the standards that I was told were part of our documents. The association says it has little or no authority to enforce the rules. How do I get the board and the management company to enforce the rules?
The first step is to determine exactly what the architectural guidelines are and what powers the association has to enforce the rules. Usually an association's declaration establishes a committee and grants it powers and duties of the board of directors. The first place to look for the powers of a committee is in the policy resolut...

Seeking relief from the brutally hot summer of 2002, David and Wendy Weiss bypassed traditional above-ground swimming pools for a far less expensive right-out-of-the-box model they bought at Toys R Us.
But the young Evansville couple didn't know that buying a model more than two feet deep -- and most are at least that deep -- meant they needed to get a pool permit from the Evansville-Vanderburgh Area Plan Commission at a cost of $25.

Q: My above-ground pool was damaged by the recent hurricanes, and now we have a disagreement with the insurance company about how to repair or replace the pool. Can you help?
A: Most above-ground pools are built as one continuous wall panel, so the chance of repairing a badly damaged individual section often is remote.
