The morbid media attention on mass killers such as Son of Sam, David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and the Unabomber, reinforced the image of serial killers as loopy white males. But the slaughter of a Latino family in Indianapolis, allegedly by Desmond Turner (a young black male) and possibly other blacks; the shooting rampage by Beltway sniper John Muhammad; and the brutal family murders in April in Baton Rouge, Louisiana shatter the reverse racial profile of a mass killer. In the Indianapolis killings, police speculated that the motive was robbery - but then the killers simply decided to kill everyone.
Even before the latest spate of mass killings by blacks, there were horrifying and alarming signs that Muhammad and the young blacks that produced the gruesome body count in Ba...

In the first week of this year, two black teens died in separate shooting incidents in Montgomery County. On Jan. 5, a 16-year-old from Huber Heights was found shot to death in front of a Dayton home, and on Jan. 7, an 18-year-old from Harrison Twp. died from gunshot wounds suffered in an altercation in Trotwood.
Having two young men, boys really, shot in the street is distressing, frightening and dramatic enough that it grabs our attention. But while being mindful violent aberrations and the social decay that seems to spawn them, it's important to acknowledge that not all young black males are destined for the morgue or the penitentiary.

In So Wrong, [Greg Mitchell], the editor at Editor & Publisher, collects and updates 79 of his columns from January 2003 to November 2007. The result: a history of the war as told through the mainstream media prism. Readers are painfully reminded of all the "turning points" cited by war proponents and their counterparts in the press-from "Mission Accomplished" to Gen. David Petraeus' troop surge.
While So Wrong describes the who, what and where of the media's Iraq meltdown, it doesn't offer much insight into the why. Aside from Mitchell's powerful introduction, which argues the press didn't approach the Bush administration's claims with enough skepticism, he doesn't elaborate on the structural reasons the media fell down on the job.
