Base on the historical record, single-year market declines on the order of 40% occur just once a century. The year 2008 saw this 100-year aberration, and, in its wake, many investors were left rethinking their financial plans. Investment plans are meant to last a lifetime, but they can be adjusted over time. In other words, investors have choices. This article examines those choices in light of historical examples and quantitative analysis. The focus is on results at the 90% confidence level in wealth forecasting analyses to ensure that an investor will be able to maintain spending in real dollars (i.e., after inflation) in the bleakest capital markets scenarios.
