The Abbey Pharmacy, at 219 Orange Street, was opened by Charles C. Abbey in September, 1894. Mr. Abbey, the proprietor, was born in Claremont, Iowa, in 1864. When he was 8 years old his parents came to California, settling at Livermore, where he attended the public schools and an academy.
Immediately following the death of his father he went to work in a general merchandise store, at the age of 14, remaining four years. In 1882 he went to Benicia and engaged in the machine shop of Baker & Hamilton, remaining one year. The Stockton Combined Harvester and Agricultural Works was his next place of employment.

A few months ago, two letters to the editor were published, one mine, having to do with trucks going to and from the port to I-5. A few days later, I noticed some folks sitting on street corners doing a truck survey. I was wondering what the results were.

[...] it was an unusual honor when the abbey recently held a special service of thanksgiving for a billionaire phi- lanthropist and Wall Street fund manager whom Money magazine in 1999 called "the greatest global stock picker of the century." Through the Trinity Forum in Europe (a long-established Scottish educational charity of which I am executive director) we are running a Templeton-supported program in Oxford, Edinburgh, and Westminster for tomorrow's leaders, with special focus on Rhodes and Marshall scholars, graduate students, young faculty members, and young comers in parliament and government.
