[...] the United States should support Muslim reformists and liberal intellectuals who are considered credible and authentic within the Muslim societies, irrespective of their political leanings (pro-Western or not). [...] there is clearly a dearth of progressive publishers in many Muslim states, whereas conservative and extremist writers (religious as well as political) have many avenues to get their works published. [...] there is an urgent need to encourage expansion of progressive and liberal publishing houses in Muslim states.

While diplomatically inconvenient for the Western powers, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' attempt to get the U.N. to unilaterally declare a Palestinian state has elicited widespread sympathy. After all, what choice did he have? According to the accepted narrative, Middle East peace is made impossible by a hard-line Likud-led Israel that refuses to accept a Palestinian state and continues to build settlements.
It is remarkable how this gross inversion of the truth has become conventional wisdom. In fact, Benjamin Netanyahu brought his Likud- led coalition to open recognition of a Palestinian state, thereby creating Israel's first national consensus for a two-state solution. He is the only prime minister to agree to a settlement freeze -- 10 months.

The key thing, as far as I'm concerned, is that there are partners in peace. Prime Minister [Ariel Sharon] wants there to be peace. President [Abbas] wants there to be peace. And both men are showing strong leadership toward achieving that objective, and that's why I'm confident. I'm a heck of a lot more confident today than when-I was when I first came into office.

No blood for mobile phones," should perhaps be the new chant in Palestine. But it's that sad fact that held the Palestinian will hostage for too many years. However, it's not just mobile companies whose interests triumph over Gaza's agony. Indeed, the post-Oslo culture has espoused a class of contractors. These are businessmen who are either high-ranking officials in the PA and the Fatah party, or both, or closely affiliated with them. Much of the billions of dollars of international aid that poured into Palestine following the signing of Oslo found its way into private bank accounts. Wealth generated more wealth and "export and import" companies sprung up like poison ivy amidst the poor dwelling of refugees throughout the Occupied Territories. The class of businessmen, still posing as...

Palestinian President Mahmud 'Abbas urged US President Barack Obama to "impose" a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, and rejected Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's suggestion of a Palestinian state with temporary borders, which Palestinian leaders feared would become permanent. According to the IDF, the two men attacked soldiers at a checkpoint. Naval commandos killed nine people, some of them Turks, during the raid, prompting Turkey to recall its ambassador to Israel and cancel joint military exercises, and sparking protests around the world.

In its effort to marginalize Palestinian rejectionists, the Bush administration is seeking to prop up Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, despite a considerable body of evidence that Mr. Abbas is not a serious partner for peace. In October, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, speaking in Washington to the American Task Force on Palestine (an organization devoted to blaming Israel for the Palestinians' woes) said that, for "peace and dignity" to prevail in the Middle East, it is essential for "moderate" Arab leaders like Mr. Abbas to be able to show that "their vision for the future can offer a better alternative than violence and terrorism." At a Nov. 30 meeting with Mr. Abbas in Jericho, Miss Rice effusively praised the PA leader, saying that he enjoys "the deep respec...

Our position on Hamas is very clear. It's a well-known position, and it hasn't changed about Hamas. Hamas is a terrorist group. It's on a terrorist list for a reason. As the elections go forward, of course, we want everybody to participate in the vote. There is something healthy about people campaigning, saying, "This is what I'm for." The President ran on a peace platform. You know, maybe somebody will run on a war platform. You know, "Vote for me.
