In some circumstances allowing a loving and responsible gay couple to adopt is almost certainly the best choice Catholic Charities could make, certainly better than leaving a child in foster care or an institution. Whether it is conscientious objection to military service or exempting Communion wine from Prohibition laws, the inviolability of religious belief lies at the heart of the Constitution's understanding of the limits of government coercion.

She's blissfully unaware - and there's surely no reason to tell her - that her heroin-addicted mother abandoned her at birth. No reason for Cristina to know that she's HIV-positive, part of a new class of children in Russia. No reason for her to know that she probably won't live long enough to read a book, ride a bike or kiss a boy.
Cristina is just the tiniest part of Russia's HIV/AIDS catastrophe, the virtually unchecked horror that's turning the old Soviet Union into the new southern Africa. With their stay in a squalid African orphanage behind them, seven Texas children are readjusting to life in America, shopping for school clothes, eating pizza and watching Harry Potter movies.
The children, ages 8 to 16, returned to Houston last week after a Texas missionary happened upon them in what he described as "an unbelievable cesspool." Some were malnourished, suffering from malaria and typhoid.

Bonnes Meres once again gave from the heart - and when the giving was tallied, 4,850 gifts overflowed tables at the Redlands Country Club.
A sold-out crowd of more than 330 Bonnes Meres and a sprinkling of Bonnes Peres gathered for the annual Birthday Luncheon on Wednesday to make wishes come true for the county's abused, neglected and abandoned children.
