Emerging literature suggests that classical political economists adopted the methodological views of figures within the Scottish Common Sense school of philosophy. This 'quasi-rationalist' approach was formulated by Scottish philosophers in reaction to arguments of Hume against the philosophy of empiricism. This movement was then embraced and adapted for political economy by John R. McCulloch, Jean Baptiste Say and James Mill, and provided its formal expression by Nassau Senior and Richard Whately.

Several studies have suggested that it is difficult to manage projects using the traditional model of project management. Researchers have proposed multiple perspectives to identify and manage such projects. This paper provides a perspective based on a complexity theory framework. Since a project exhibits the characteristics of a complex system, we postulate that the method to manage such a project is embedded in its contextual history. Such a method cannot be predicted a priori but will rather emerge from the interactions between the project elements and the environment.

The purpose of this study was to assess if employees reciprocated perceived organizational support (POS), and proce- dural, interactive, and distributive justice, through self-reported intentions to enact organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). The study employed a correlation analysis from data drawn from 93 self-reported employee responses to a single questionnaire in a small North American manufacturer. The findings of the study indicated a modest correlation between OCB intentions directed at the organization and POS. Perceived organizational support (POS) fully mediated the relationship between organizational justice dimensions, and between organizational justice and OCB intentions directed at the organization. Intentions to enact OCB directed at peers failed to correlate with ...

Out-of-class involvement provides students with opportunities for rich social lives which, according to Cheng (2004), are closely associated with sense of campus community. Based on Astin's (1984) Theory of Involvement, and Boyer's (1990) principles of community, the purpose of this study was to examine how involvement in out-of-class activities influences students' perceived sense of campus community. Three hundred and thirty respondents completed an on-line questionnaire which consisted of demographics and questions related to their out-of-class involvement in 14 areas as identified by the institutions' Dean of Students Office, and a 25-item sense of community scale developed by Cheng (2004). Out-of-class involvement levels were examined using a hierarchical cluster analysis. Explorat...

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bertrand Russell put forward the concept of an "analytic empiricism," an approach which he held to "eliminate Pythagoreanism from the principles of mathematics, and to combine empiricism with an interest in the deductive parts of human knowledge,"1 thus overcoming the limitations of both empiricism and rationalism which he saw to be at the heart of philosophy. Whilst the foundations of mathematics had not been clarified, a move to mathematics as method was impossible, which explains Russell's early Hegelian tendencies, but the solid foundations given to the infinitesimal calculus by Weierstrass, and the solution of Leibniz's paradox by Cantor seemed to Russell to open up the possibility of a new method, which would allow the discrete analysis ...
