SWEET TURNS SOUR: Cargill Inc., the largest U.S, agricultural company, said it will pay $24 million to settle a lawsuit alleging the company conspired with rivals to rig the prices in the $3 billion U.S. market for corn-based sweeteners. Co-defendants Archer- Daniels-Midland Co. and A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. plan to fight the allegations. Food companies including Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. filed a class-action lawsuit in 1995.

HOULTON - State and local officials met last week to discuss how to assist the water company with a cost-effective wastewater disposal option that will prevent possible contamination of the town's drinking water.
Discussion ceased after an hour, however, when the group concurred that representatives from A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. in Houlton and others were needed for the dialogue to continue.
