Every year hundreds of new and exciting flowers and vegetables are introduced to the garden trade. Some will grow well in some areas of the country and some will not. Since 1932, the All-America Selections (AAS) has been a way for home gardeners to learn which new varieties do well throughout the country. The AAS Winners maintains a series of Trial Grounds across North America where they test and display new varieties. Although they are tested and sold in the U.S. and Canada, seed companies from around the world enter their choices.

This year's Golden Globes have been handed out, nominations for the Academy Awards were announced last week, and the Grammy Awards ceremony is just more than a week away. Though we might not always agree, these annual accolades often determine who's hot and who's not in this country's film and music industries. Little pomp and circumstance surrounds the horticultural industry's awards, though, because most are bestowed in the fall for the coming year. Large photos of the winners often appear in the front of seed catalogs, along with their designations, proof that plant awards mean plant sales.
