Tuesday was 06/06/06, and for several weeks prior to the day, many people were in a panic. It is widely known that 666 is the devil's number, the "number of the beast." Superstitions ran high; there were rumors of an apocalypse -- the end of the world. Or something.
Bad news for television evangelists and heavy metal bands everywhere: It seems that Satan has been deceiving us for the past 2,000 years and the Number of the Beast is not actually 666, but the far less menacing 616. This strange piece of historical revisionism comes from a group of previously unintelligible manuscripts that include fragments of the Book of Revelation and date back to the third century. Using modern technology, Biblical experts have finally been able to translate the manuscripts and their opinion is that the Number of the Beast mentioned in Revelations actually translates as 616. "This is an example of gematria, where numbers are based on the numerical values of letters in people's names," said David Parker, a professor of New Testament textual criticism and paleography...
Some days just start out beastly. Like today -- 6/6/06, a chronological oddity that won't pop up again for another 100 years. Some people are casting today as the Tuesday of the Beast because of the date's similarity to the number 666, a figure that, in the apocalyptic book of Revelation, is closely associated with the Antichrist.
NEW YORK -- Around the country, some superstitious mothers-to-be took steps Tuesday to make sure their babies were not born on the most bedeviling of dates, 6/6/6. In New York, "people are canceling left and right because of what today represents," said Liza Washington, an administrative assistant at Children's Hospital of the New York-Presbyterian Medical Center. More than a dozen deliveries were postponed because of 666, which is said to be the "Number of the Beast" in the Book of Revelation.
Attendance at Cheshire High School and North Haven Middle School was down 15 percent or more Tuesday, as parents spooked by unsubstantiated rumors of a "hit list" of students possibly targeted for violence kept their children home. The rumors were associated with Tuesday being June 6; some associate 6/6/06 with the biblical "number of the beast," 666, signifying the coming of the antichrist. With a stepped-up police presence at Cheshire High, there were no reports of any problems, Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio said Tuesday. But absentee rates, which usually run between 3 percent and 5 percent of the student body, shot up fivefold, Florio said.
If you place significance in numbers, today might be a good day to stay in bed. Today, of course, is June 6, 2006. To put it another way, this is the day of 666, a number long associated with evil in the Christian faith. In the Bible, Revelation 13:18 specifically names 666 as "the mark of the beast," and many people consider the number to be very bad news.
