  • It is widely known today that the school systems as we know them are unable to cope with current political, economic and social realities. The school system needs to rethink and change the entire education system in order to reach and keep students interested in learning. Below are a few suggestions. One suggestion would be to change the every other day elective class from music and art to an economics class. An economics class could offer money and investing skills. These skills could help a student learn how to save and invest money for the future. Not everyone is artistic or musical. Another suggestion would be to change the gym class from the usual routine of running, playing basketball, football and dodge ball to swimming, weightlifting or aerobics. By offering more variety more st...

  • No one really knows when soup was invented. Historians claim boiling food dates back to 5000 B.C., and evidence of soup-making has been found in Egyptian tombs. Early ancestors must have seen the advantages of boiling, which, unlike fire, provides efficient "full contact" cooking at a low, steady and repeatable temperature. Early versions were simple broths served with breadcalled a "sop"- to soak up the liquid, giving birth to the term "soup." As soup-making diversified, it was Antoine Carême, architect of French haute cuisine, and later, Auguste Escoffier, father of classic French food, who divided soups into modern day egories like bouillon, consommé, purée, bisque, cream and velouté. Turn off the heat and let the soup cool slightly. In small batches, purée an equal amount of stock a...

  • In discussions with friends and colleagues here in Dubai, the conversation often turns to "the Dubai model" - fast growth, bold expansion, rapid implementation of plans, efficient service delivery, openness to the world. A recurring discussion concerns whether [Dubai] teaches the Arab world something important, and whether the Dubai model can or should be replicated in other countries. A more useful discussion would be about the nature of urbanism, and how the role of the city in Arab culture and history will adapt to our new globalized world. This pertains to fast-growing Gulf cities like Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Manama, and ambitious new city projects in Saudi Arabia, as well as the revitalization of urban areas in cities like Beirut and Amman. Arab planners, leaders and c...

  • The use of internal auditing can be traced back to 5000 BC, but neither corporations nor independent auditors recognized auditing as an important function until the 1930s. The establishment of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) in 1941 helped promote the image of the internal auditing profession. The IIA's Statement of Responsibilities of the Internal Auditor, issued in 1947, was a milestone in internal auditing in that it provided a definition of the internal auditing function. The Statement was revised in 1957, 1971, 1976, and 1981 to reflect changes in the internal auditing profession. These revisions demonstrate the progress that internal auditing has made.

  • If you think lotteries are harmless fun, read on. Brigham Young University math professor Tyler Jarvis has pointed out: "The chances of winning the California Lotto Jackpot are approximately 1 in 18 million. If you have to drive 10 miles to buy this ticket, you are three times more likely to be killed in an automobile accident on the way than to win the jackpot." He added that if you stood all the losers of this lottery in a line, it would be 6,800 miles long, more than the distance from Manhattan to Tokyo. Here's another way to think about it: If you bought 50 tickets per week, you ought to win once every 6,923 years. So you'd be due to win today - if you'd started playing around 5000 B.C. McMaster University mathematics and statistics professor Fred Hoppe asked this question: "Would y...
