When the Transportation Security Administration was looking for new uniforms for its 40,000 officers in 2003, it wanted to avoid dark colors, which research shows are intimidating because they remind people of the military. The agency wanted to show patriotism through its color selection, but it also wanted to be fashionable, and bright red was a turnoff from a style perspective. As symbols of social values, uniforms inspire debates over gender roles, worker rights, fashion and outsourcing. Other agencies have added maternity clothing and styles that fit better as more women have entered the workforce. Creating a sense of unity through clothing poses unique procurement challenges. Agencies often want more than manufacturing services from their uniform contractors; they want expertise on...

The sportswear market is estimated to be worth $35 billion. In August, a Baltimore-based clothier popular among military service members got in on the trend. Founded in 1996, Under Armour Inc makes a line of tops, pants, shorts, underwear and other performance apparel designed for a simple purpose: to keep you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. Under Armour has a line of apparel called Tactical that is modified for soldiers. Under Armour is sold in retail outlets nationwide and on military clothing Web sites, as well as its own. The Army's soldier gear requisitioning service, the Program Executive Office Soldier, says Under Armour T-shirts perform better in warm weather than the Army's own version, but they cost about five times more.

Having plugged the most noticeable holes in commercial aviation security with more stringent inspection of passengers and luggage since Sept. 11, the government is broadening its focus. With industry, it is studying ways to make every aspect of an airport more secure - from perimeter gate to airplane door. The illustration included with this article depicts what may be happening at airports in 2010 and beyond to keep travelers safe and secure. This composite is based on information obtained from roughly 2 dozen government and industry sources. Many of the technologies are immature, and cost and privacy issues still must be resolved. Checkpoints are choke points today, because airports were not designed and built with post-Sept. 11 security requirements in mind. The scarcity of space for...

CLOVERFIELD. In Matt Reeves' thriller, you don't know why a hideous, skyscraper-sized creature is rampaging through the city. But it is,- and since you're in its way, you'd better figure out how to deal with it before your butt gets killed. The film is that simple, intense and crazy for its 80 minutes, as you travel vicariously through the city via the "video camera" of one scared dude. There are no lonq shots of the monster knocking stuff over, or presidential press conferences explaining things. The exclusively first-person technique utilized here means we're living it, we're trying to escape. Back story - who tares? As for the monster, its presence is key to the story - even though, through much of the film, we can't see it. When it's finally revealed, the payoff is worth the wait. S...

The future of the federal workforce is on display on social networking Web sites such as Facebook and MySpace, and the picture is mixed. Young employees are baring their personal predilections and their agencies' peccadilloes on the sites at the same time government recruiters and boosters are using them to troll for talent. In the dissonant mix, opposing messages can cancel each other out. Federal employees are not writing only about manicures and music on social networking sites. They write about their jobs, too. There are no governmentwide guidelines for the use of social networking sites, and no agencies have asked the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for such guidance, says Kevin Mahoney, OPM's associate director for human capital leadership. All of OPM's online energy has gone...
