  • Ritchie Campbell played an organized basketball game in Buffalo for the first time since 1993 on Saturday afternoon and once again the sport treated Western New York's all-time scholastic scoring leader well. The now 40-year-old Campbell and former Burgard star received a loud ovation (some even stood) from the estimated 500 at City Honors during pregame introductions for the 411 Legends All-Star Game. He rewarded them by showing off that score-from-anywhere jumper, and the passing ability that helped him assist on a number of former Burgard teammate Marcus Whitfield's baskets when the Bulldogs were an area power during the late 1980s.

Take a winter bird hike at Weldon Springs State Park with site interpreter Carol McFeeters Thompson at 8:30 a.m. today. Leave from Chautauqua Picnic Area. State parks in all 50 states are offering First Day Hikes to promote healthy lifestyles, shared stewardship of our natural and recreational resources, and year-round recreation in America's state parks. All skill levels are welcome; binoculars will be available for loan. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather. The hike will total about a mile over moderate terrain, with frequent stops.

  • For women only Vitesse Cycle/Often Running in Normal hosts Women's Triathlon from 7 to 10 p.m. March 29. The Ladies from the Trek WSD Team and from the Vitesse Cycle-Path Performance Tri-Team will be on hand to talk about riding and training for a triathlon. Refreshments will be served. Tom Stagg from Bartonville was winner of the bike raffle sponsored by the Friends of the Constitution Trail and its partner Good To Go at last weekend's Sugar Creek Arts Festival. He won a Trek 7100, bike helmet and gear. The two groups parked 465 bikes in a valet-style, secure bike parking area during the fest. The groups also provided bike parking at the Illinois Sustainable Living and Wellness Expo at Illinois Wesleyan University and at Ain't Nothing But The Blues Festival at G.E. Park in Bloomington Friday and Saturday. The bike parking will be back in uptown Normal Aug. 27-28 for the Sweet Corn Blues Festival.

  • Trail volunteers Normal police are looking for a few good men and women to serve in the NPD Safety Ambassador Program. Citizen volunteers are trained to patrol Constitution Trail at peak hours of use. Volunteers serve two-hour stints, often in pairs, to report hazardous conditions and suspicious activity via police radio. Volunteers must be McLean County residents, at least 21 years old, pass a background check, complete training and have a bike and helmet.
