Likening next month's closure of the 405 Freeway to a traffic "car-mageddon," city and county officials unveiled more details Monday of next month's epic shutdown, but said the best option is to simply stay away. Monday's press conference was the latest installment in a public awareness campaign about plans to close a 10-mile stretch of the 405 from July 15-18 as part of a $1 billion freeway widening project.
COME July 16, the estimated 500,000 motorists who travel Sepulveda Pass between the Valley and the Westside during weekends may find the popular freeway and surrounding surface streets more congested than usual. The northbound 405 between the 10 and 101 freeways, and southbound lanes from the 101 to Getty Center Drive will be closed starting on midnight, Friday, July 15 as a section of the Mulholland bridge is removed. The bridge dismantlement is part of the ongoing 405 widening project.
Freeway construction crews will close the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway between Seal Beach Boulevard and the San Gabriel (605) Freeway from 11 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday. Workers will also close the southbound 405 between the 605 and Seal Beach Boulevard overnight Friday and Saturday. This portion of the southbound 405 Freeway will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday, and from 11 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

Both directions of the San Diego Freeway won't be closed simultaneously.
