Two years later, I finally had the chance to meet [David Strackany]. He arrived-under the name Paleo-in Idaho to play a show. He was immersed in a musical project so ambitious that it overshadowed Misery, Missouri, entirely. He didn't use poet friends or cattle ranch stories to make this project stand out. Strackany's plan was to write and record a song a day for an entire year, all while touring the United States. He had been going at it for two months when I met him and he showed no signs of losing steam. His approach was simple. He wouldn't fall asleep at night until he had completely documented a new song for that day regardless of the circumstances.
He'says he receives most of his lyrical inspiration from poetry, but feels the best lyrics "come up in conversations, things people sa...

As leader of the Wooden Birds, Andrew Kenny pairs intimate, sunny guitar chords with melancholy lyrics. The songs may be sad, but their creator couldn't be more content.

'Bring me a one-legged woman, a monkey and a lumberjack,'" says [Suzie Morris]. "That's my inspiration." When not quoting David Lynch, Morris is busy working on a line of woolen dresses, jackets and skirts that would suit Audrey in Twin Peaks. Morris is a strange bird, but affably so. None of it is tiresome pretense. Instead it's a genuine love for what she creates. "I make whatever needs making," she says. "It could be a chair, a dress, a lamp or stuffed animals." And those stuffed animals are pretty creepy. "I get a bunch of stuffed animals, put them on a table and whack them apart. Sometimes a horn becomes a tooth, a face an ass ..." What we're left with is an impressively Lynchian toothless teddy bear with one porcelain doll leg that might talk in reverse in your dreams. "I don't m...

Born ol me long walks he took in nearby Dyffryn Ceiriog, the poems and "prose poems" are without exception lyrical evocations of the natural world, suffused with the unfocused romantic longings of the narrating voice, whc wanders alone (almost every poem contains a first-person pronoun), often at evening or at dusk: ". . . the mystic hour, / When whitely shone the unknown flower, / and darkling wings had swept away / the last pale streamers of the day ..." Given the occasional existence of such imaginary "maids" in Spindrift, one must approach the poem simply entitled "Sonnet" with some caution: I never thought in this poor world to find Another who had loved the things I love, The wind, the trees, the cloud-swept sky above; One who was beautiful and grave and kind, Who struck no disco...
