Connecticut residents will adapt as they did 10 years ago when the state was split into two telephone area codes: 203, which covers New Haven and Fairfield counties, and 860, for the rest of Connecticut. As of Saturday, the number of area codes is doubling again. New phone lines in the 203 area code will be assigned the 475 area code. All the 203 area codes numbers have been used. Starting sometime next year, new phone lines in the 860 territory will get the 959 area code when the 860 numbers have been exhausted. The change is certain to cause some confusion and inconvenience. If a phone line is added, telephones in the same home or business will have different area codes.
