NEW YORK, Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ten years ago life in the United States changed when for the first time Americans were attacked by foreign terrorists within the borders of the U.S. Afterwards it became "normal" to take shoes off before boarding an airplane, to see heavily armed soldiers in airline terminals, and to think about the phrase "if you see something, say something" when on public transportation.

I was at the fair, getting another cup of coffee at Lerch's, before the hog show got into full swing. I stopped to talk to talk to Dave Miller when his wife called from her office to say a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. As Dave was talking to Linda, she said a second plane crashed into the other tower.
News and rumors kept coming in all day. As a 4-H adviser with kids showing, it was frustrating not being able to leave to find out what was going on. As soon as all my kids were done, I left the fair to go home and watch over and over the day's events.

We were picking produce that fateful morning and received a call from our daughter wondering where her older brother was flying to that morning. She told us to turn on our TV, and words really can't describe the emotions we felt.
I remember going to Walmart the next day and the store being almost empty, but all the TVs were tuned to the disaster. It was the eeriest feeling, one I will never forget.

Events that led to a carbon monoxide leak at a South Charleston hotel that killed a man and injured 17 other people last month began 11 years ago, when the hotel improperly installed a swimming pool heating unit, according to a report released Tuesday.
South Charleston Fire Department Capt. Virgil White said in the report that workers at the Holiday Inn Express on Corridor G "physically manipulated" an exhaust pipe leading from the unit during the hotel's construction. The building was finished in 2001.

The 10th anniversary of 9/11 is upon us. And as we reflect on that awful day 10 years ago, many of us wonder about the long-term impact of the terrorist attack. Put another way: What would the United States have been like if the attacks had never occurred?
That's a counterfactual question, of course, and no self- respecting historian can answer it with any authority. But we can think about some of the powerful changes that have occurred in the past 10 years and consider their implications.
