The record debuted at #7 on the country chart, #30 on the Top 40 album chart and #1 on the folk album chart. According to the Lilith Fair Web site, the 1990s run raised more than $10 million for local and national charities through ticket sales. Despite the fact that a few highly packaged women dominate the charts and sell out stadiums, there are dozens of genres and hundreds of female artists who will never make a single Billboard chart, despite being loved by a devoted, if small, group of fans.

The beautiful notion of "Peace on Earth, good will toward men" doesn't always apply to the age-old debate over how early is truly too early to play Christmas music. With Thanksgiving behind us, even the biggest skeptics and Scrooges among us can agree it's time to turn our stereos and iPods into vessels for Christmas cheer. With holiday albums in existence by almost anyone who's ever had a record contract, it can be hard to know what sounds to choose as you wind your way through the most wonderful time of the year. Here are but a few humble suggestions of albums to embrace, avoid and wrap up for your next white elephant office party.

When Sarah McLachlan was last in Portland it was April 1998. She had two multi-platinum albums to her credit and two Grammy Awards. As the co-founder of the three-year-long Lilith Fair tour, she was hailed as being on the forefront of modern feminism and, in some cases, criticized for not being feminist enough.
Her sold-out concert at the Cumberland County Civic Center in 1998 was one of her last solo concerts before she went on hiatus. In 2003, she released "Afterglow," her first studio album in six years. She's been on tour in support of that album since its release. She performs at the Cumberland County Civic Center to a nearly-sold out audience on Friday. The Perishers open.
