  • TAMPA, Fla. -- That supposed bastion of amateur athletic purity, the Olympics, finally stopped swimming against the tide and consented to the use of professional athletes following the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea. That decision opened the door for the greatest assemblage of hoops talent ever, the United States' "Dream Team," to run roughshod over the competition in men's basketball at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. There are those who would throw in with the International Olympic Committee and end the hypocrisy -- some of it, anyway -- and acknowledge certain realities in the increasingly sordid realm of big-time college football.

  • It's clear, however, that a retired businessman from the Class of '51 gave enough for a wing of the refurbished Starr Library to be named the Donald Everett Axinn Center for Literary and Cultural Studies; and in 1998, Middlebury inaugurated the Kenyon Arena, an ice hockey rink largely paid for by Richmond "Chip" Kenyon, a 1985 graduate. The amounts of those two gifts have never been divulged. One important campus landmark - the $40 million Main Library - still awaits a patron whose generosity meets the school's doubtlessly high standard of munificence. But while it took 15 years for Kevin P. Mahaney to step up and claim the arts center, it's probably only a matter of time for the library, which opened in 2004. Mahaney says he is a frequent donor whose previous generosity has been on beh...

  • Oscar De La Hoya captured the hearts of a nation when he won the Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, keeping a promise to his mother, Cecilia, who died nearly two years earlier from breast cancer. De La Hoya went on to have a record-setting career as a professional, but it came to an end Tuesday when he announced his retirement before a large media contingent and hundreds of fans on Nokia Theatre Plaza at L.A.Live.

  • Admit it. Somewhere in your basement is that one-piece snowsuit that you learned to ski in. Perhaps it's hot pink? And perhaps it's stored next to that pair of speed skis you picked up after seeing the sport in the 1992 Winter Olympics? Fads and fashions on the slopes have been coming and going for a long time. Some return every few years, while most lose their momentum and screech to a halt like a snowboarder on a Vail traverse.

  • When Fr. Eric Peterson and Amy Schaefer created the first St. Ann Special Olympics (now called the St. Ann Special Athletes Fun Day) in 1992, they had no idea that 20 years later it would still be growing, from a handful of youth special athletes to more than 125 participants, including adults. The 20th annual St. Ann Special Athletes Fun Day will be held Oct. 8 at Christian Brothers High School, 5900 Walnut Grove Road and will be a day filled with smiles, cheers and hugs. Stacy Stricklen, a member of St. Ann Church in Bartlett, has been participating in the annual event since its beginning , not only as an athlete participating in the wheelchair race, Frisbee throw and softball throw each year, but also by playing the National Anthem during the opening ceremonies.

  • NUREMBERG, Germany -- When it comes to USA vs. Africa in team sports, the enduring image might be of basketball Dream Teamer Charles Barkley giving a cheap-shot elbow to a skinny Angolan opponent at the 1992 Olympics. Opportunities to get payback for that kind of impoliteness don't come along very often, but Ghana's got a chance Thursday.

  • Gail Devers overcame Graves' Disease and its debilitating treatment (she came close to having both feet amputated) to win photo-finish golds in the 100 meters in both the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Though she placed out of the money in the 100-meter hurdles, her best event, in four straight Olympics, she did win world championships in the hurdles three times, and was the top-ranked 100-meter hurdler in the world six times between 1992 and 2001.
