NASHVILLE, Tenn. - New Tennessee Coach Mike Munchak has hired his friend and former teammate, Hall of Fame lineman Bruce Matthews, to coach the Titans' offensive line. Matthews was selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the then-Houston Oilers and went on to play 19 seasons for the franchise, earning 14 consecutive Pro Bowl selections and nine first- team All-Pro honors. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.
The 1983 NFL draft always will be remembered as the quarterback draft, the one in which Hall of Famers John Elway, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly were part of a six-QB first round. Now 25 years later, the 2008 NFL draft may someday be recalled as the running back draft. That's based on the production of nine rookies listed in the top 50 NFL rushers entering the 14th weekend of play.
The Pittsburgh Athletic Association will induct former Pitt star Jimbo Covert into its Hall of Fame and honor the region's top high school football player with the Mercury Award on Saturday night. Covert, a Freedom graduate, was a two-time All-American at Pitt who was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He was the sixth pick of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, with whom he won a Super Bowl and was named a two-time All-Pro by The Associated Press and to the 1980s All-Decade team.
