  • In conducting interviews with those who played for the Milwaukee Brewers during their 1982 World Series season, the first thing that strikes you is how many are still involved in baseball, in one role or another. Of the 28 players who spent significant time on the roster of that club, 17 remain active in the game, either at the big-league level, the minors or the amateur ranks. They are coaches, instructors, managers, scouts, special assistants. You name it, and they're doing it.

  • Cardinals 12, Brewers 4 MILWAUKEE - The St. Louis Cardinals scored six runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 12-4 victory over Milwaukee, spoiling the Brewers' 1982 World Series team reunion.

  • From news services Walt Jocketty is out as general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, one year after the team won the World Series for the first time since 1982.

  • MILWAUKEE (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals were hurting the last time they were in Milwaukee. This time around, they're climbing back into the pennant race. The Cardinals pounded out a season-high 19 hits off of sloppy Milwaukee Brewers pitching in a 12-4 victory on Tuesday night, drawing the Cardinals closer to contention in the N.L. Central and spoiling the Brewers'1982 World Series team reunion.

  • Different teams, different eras. Neither Whitey Herzog, manager of the 1982 World Series winners, nor Red Schoendienst, manager of the 1967 team, would say which St. Louis Cardinals team was better. Herzog noted that Schoendienst's 1967 cast of veterans boasted the best pitcher in the National League in Bob Gibson - and his No. 2 guy, Steve Carlton, wasn't bad, either.

  • The first moon landing, any of the Brewers' 1982 World Series games, the Beatles' big break - most people can pinpoint where they were when those landmark events shook the world. Will the hometown return of guitar legend Les Paul and his highly anticipated concert take on that kind of mystique?

  • Whitey Herzog was surrounded by reporters on the well-worn Busch Stadium Astroturf. A game in the 1982 World Series was a couple of hours away, and Herzog would be managing a team built around speed and defense. His St. Louis Cardinals tracked down balls in the gaps, led by newly acquired rookie Willie McGee, and stole bases at will. Herzog was asked what the team was like a couple of years earlier, when he arrived as manager.

  • UCLA's softball tradition is hard to overstate. The Bruins have won 10 national championships and advanced to the title game another eight times since the College World Series began in 1982.
