  • WASHINGTON -- The World Cup kicked off in Johannesburg last week, and once again the connection between politics and soccer has tongues wagging. There is some exaggeration about the effect of triumph and failure on governments. Brazil's stunning loss to Uruguay in the 1950 final held in Rio de Janeiro did not harm President Gaspar Dutra. The victory some months later by his successor, Getulio Vargas, was unrelated to the soccer debacle. The fact that Italy won the 1982 World Cup held in Spain did not help Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini, the first non-Christian Democrat of the postwar era, whose party was expelled from power soon after the national team's triumph.

  • FRANKFURT, Germany - Jupp Derwall, who coached Germany's soccer team to the European title in 1980 and a runner-up finish at the 1982 World Cup, died Tuesday. He was 80. He died after a brief illness, the German soccer federation said, without giving details.

  • Lang Ping is China's national volleyball treasure, but now it's the U.S. women's team she wants to lead to a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. On the second floor of the gym at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Lang -- who goes by her American nickname Jenny -- wears a whistle during practice, but also a sleeve on her knee and tape on her wrist and finger. She is 44, but looks like the athlete who brought China to worldwide volleyball prominence as a player two decades ago. China won Olympic gold over the United States in 1984, a world championship in 1982 and World Cup titles in 1981 and 1985.

  • BOCHUM, Germany (AP) - Portugal isn't exactly George Mason, though its soccer pedigree isn't much stronger than what the Patriots brought to college basketball's Final Four. Then again, surprise teamthe World Cup semifinals are hardly a surprise. Since 1982, the last time four European teams got this far - West Germany, Italy and France made it, along with, unexpectedly, Poland - there was just one tournament when a relative outsider didn't sneak into the semifinals.

  • BADEN, Austria -- Italy overcame the loss of injured captain Fabio Cannavaro and the huge defensive hole that created. What did the World Cup champions in at the European Championship was an ineffective attack, overly reliant on an off-form Luca Toni, and designed by a coach that few people believed in. The Italians lost 4-2 on penalty kicks to Spain following a dull 0-0 draw in the quarterfinals Sunday.

...After the Azzurri won the 1982 World Cup, they didn't even qualify for Euro 1984....

  • The first time the U.S. Ski Team had two serious contenders for the World Cup overall title, they were identical twins who looked alike, acted alike and sounded alike. They even skied alike, except one skied faster. Phil Mahre won three World Cup titles (1981-83) making him the only American man to claim the crystal globe that is ski racing's most coveted prize while twin Steve finished fourth in 1981 and third in 1982.

  • There's an unbending trend to the World Cup, one that defies the laws of diversity and probability. Only seven teams have hoisted the trophy in 18 tournaments. Only five have competed in a final since 1982.
