Q: Did you experience another lapse when you wrote about Joey Votto, saying there hasn't been a Triple Crown winner since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. How about Secretariat in 1973? -- Dave, Miamisburg/ Centerville/Beavercreek

  • In 1967, American League triple-crown winner and league MVP Carl Yastrzemski led the Boston Red Sox into the World Series to face legendary right-hander Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals. With St. Louis leading the Fall Classic 3-1, Boston countered with two straight wins to force a Game 7.

  • The Derby trail turns its attention to the Big Apple this weekend as nine 3-year-old colts will tackle the Big A looking for precious graded stakes earnings and a potential date in Louisville on May 7. The $250,000 Grade 3 Gotham Stakes will be run at Aqueduct Racetrack over 1 1/16 miles on the inner dirt track. While it hasn't led to a Triple Crown race winner in the past few years, the race does lay claim to some terrific past winners such as Secretariat (1973), Easy Goer (1989), Gone West (1987), Dr. Fager (1967) and Native Dancer (1953).

  • It is regarded as the pinnacle of baseball accomplishments, a feat so difficult that it has been extinct since 1967. To win a Triple Crown, a player must lead his league in batting average, home runs and RBI, and nobody has pulled off that triumvirate since Carl Yastrzemski posted the numbers .326, 44, 121 some 38 years ago.

  • I was thinking: Criticism that 44-year-old Roger Clemens is only a six-inning pitcher at this stage of his career is moot. The way the game is now played, every starting pitcher in major league baseball is essentially a six-inning pitcher. When a pitcher reaches the 100-pitch count -- which generally correlates to a quality six or seven innings -- they're pretty much done for the night. As great a pitcher as the Twins' Johan Santana is, he's only averaging 6.5 innings and hasn't gone over seven innings yet. San Diego's Jake Peavy, who leads the league in ERA, hasn't gone over seven yet. Andy Pettitte hasn't gone over 7A1/2. Detroit's Justin Verlander is averaging just over six. So who cares if Rogers only goes six, if they're quality innings? I'd be more worried by the fact that his fas...

  • Don't look now, but Albert Pujols is making a spirited run at a possible Triple Crown. After going 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs at Pittsburgh on Monday night, Pujols leads the NL with 33 homers and 92 RBIs, and he's up to third in batting at .319, just four percentage points behind the Reds' Joey Votto. Votto has a shot at a Triple Crown, too. He leads in batting and is third in homers (29) and second in RBIs to Pujols with 86. Pujols has been on an amazing tear. In August, he is hitting .425 with nine homers and 20 RBIs. His OPS for the month is a staggering 1.351.

  • The Washington Nationals step into the path of arguably the greatest right-handed power hitter in baseball history on Thursday night, and he is on a rampage. No, neither Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers nor Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees will be at Nationals Park. The same holds for a pair of living Hall of Famers, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.
