Ghoul daze
In the weeks preceding Halloween, the average American, according to statistics I just made up, will hear "The Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett 17.3 times. That novelty hit from 1962 (trivia note: Leon Russell played piano on the record) seems omnipresent, but it's hardly the only tacky rock 'n' roll monster song. They're everywhere -- full of shrieks, wolf howls, cackling witch laughs, bad horror puns, and even worse Boris and Bela impersonations -- if you know where to look for them.

When he showed up at Columbia Records on the afternoon of June 14, 1965, guitar case in hand, Al Kooper wasn't contracted to be there. But as a seasoned session player, songwriter and engineer, Kooper was a fixture in the New York music-industry scene.
He had been part of the group the Royal Teens in 1958 when they scored a hit with "Short Shorts." Gary Lewis & the Playboys took Kooper's tune "This Diamond Ring" to the top of the charts, though Kooper had originally co-written it with somebody much cooler in mind, maybe the Drifters.
...Kooper also saw potential in the Zombies, a second-tier British Invasion group, when he sig...

As we head deeper into the summer, outdoor festivals and concerts abound. This weekend there are two festivals of note - Common Ground On the Hill and the All Good Festival.
Common Ground On the Hill is a sprawling folk summit meeting and concert weekend in Western Maryland. Common Ground offers two weeks of classes, workshops, concerts and events on the campus of McDaniel College. Common Ground offers learning experiences with master musicians, artists, writers and craftspeople while exploring cultural diversity in search of a "common ground" among ethnic, gender, age and racial groups.
