south has chosen exactly one leader in a fair election, current President Vicente Fox.
He presides over a nation where disparities of wealth between the working poor and the politically connected corrupt are as disheartening as the 40percent of citizens living below the poverty line a figure that excludes those millions of poor Mexicans who immigrated to the United States seeking a better life.

Continuing on the path of a centennial reconquest of power, Mexico's former ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) easily won October 18 municipal elections in the northern border state of Coahuila. While the PRI has long been the dominant political force in Coahuila, even during the last nine years of National Action Party (PAN) governments at the federal level, the party born from the blood of the 1910 Mexican Revolution dislodged rivals from the key cities of Torreon, San Pedro and Ciudad Acuna in voting last Sunday.
The PRI also won hands down in the border city of Piedras Negras. Far from a sore loser, the PAN's Dr. Angel Humberto Garcia Reyes literally embraced winning opponent Jose Manuel Maldonado Maldonado and announced his support for Piedras Negras' new mayor. "Pepe i...

Topics up for discussion at this year's annual event ranged from, "Is There Life on Other Planets?" to "The Role of Government in Early Childhood Education" and "1910 Mexican Revolution: Its Lasting Impact on San Antonio and the Southwest," among others.
Everyone selected their own topics, whether they were interested in writing or water conservation, or whatever it is that they want to do, and we let them come and talk about their topic," explained [Ricardo Romo]. "The moderator's job is to get everybody talking, not to be the leader and talk the entire time, but to get folks to speak up and tells us what they think.

From the time the smoke cleared from the 1910 Mexican Revolution until the 20th century ended, our neighbor nation was run by warlords and their successors who formed a "revolutionary party." The firm hands of Sonorans lvaro Obregn, Plutarco Elas Calles and Abelardo Rodrguez formed a bureaucracy that could, they insisted, do no wrong, because everything it did was in the name of -- hand to heart, bugles in the background -- la revolucin.
With Miguel Alemn in the wake of World War II, generals gave way to well-educated briefcase-carriers, and the party thrived in its new institutionalized-revolutionary form: PRI's logo, in the national colors of red, green and white, became an eye-numbing part of the landscape from Chiapas to Chihuahua.

The imposition of a strong-armed dictatorship headed by Porfirio Díaz from 1877 to 1910 opened Mexico to foreign economic control. This influence only exacerbated Mexico's disunity, he continued. The Mexican Revolution of 1910 not only successfully overthrew the Díaz dictatorship, but promoted a national identity centered on Mexico's mestizo, or mixed population and culture, as well as revived appreciation for its indigenous roots. Despite the violence and heavy loss of life, a more unified and nationalistic Mexico emerged following s...

Alfredo Corchado felt numb when he returned as Mexico bureau chief for the Dallas Morning News.
The journalist had been away as a 2009 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and realized - after years of investigative reporting that resulted in multiple death threats from Mexico's ruthless drug cartels and gangs - that he no longer wanted to put his life on the line.

¡Viva México! - Heroes and Artisans celebrates the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence (1810), the 100th of the Mexican revolution (1910) and the folk art that colorfully and vitally expresses the nation's spirit. Just as the heroes of independence and the revolution were great artisans in crafting the nation's constitution, laws and institutions, so are its many artisans also cultural heroes, vibrantly perpetuating Mexico's historical memory and its distinctive, exuberant and vital artistic tradition. A complementary exhibition, Tempering Memory is an intimate exhibition of photographs of historical locations in Mexico by Tijuana-based photographer Julio Rodriguez.
