ALBANY, N.Y. -- On a Manhattan sidewalk the other day, I saw two people whose eyes were fixed on their little hand-held devices run smack into each other -- ouch! -- followed by embarrassed apologies. Actually, I saw only the aftermath of the collision, because I had been reading my BlackBerry as I was walking along.
How foolish of those New Yorkers, I thought. Of course, unlike them, I had an excuse for my BlackBerry behavior: I'm a newspaper editor. My job is to ensure that no tree falls in a forest hereabouts without a witness to record it, on the Web and in print. I have to keep up with what's going on, even when I'm headed to lunch, which is what I was doing when the guy in front of me took the hit that would otherwise have been mine.
