Like the country during the Civil War era it is meant to commemorate, the West Virginia Sesquicentennial Commission has become a house sharply divided - with several commissioners resigning in protest over the panel's direction.
At issue is whether the commission should focus on educational efforts to expand the public's understanding of events leading up to the state's creation in 1863 - or emphasize tourist-friendly Civil War re-enactments, parades and festivals.

The most celebrated aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg, and one of the most recognizable events of the entire Civil War, is the grand assault that occurred July 3, 1863, known as "Pickett's Charge.
This culminating confrontation took its name from Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett, who commanded one of the three Confederate infantry divisions that courageously marched across open fields into a deadly firestorm. While Pickett gained great fame that day, history has neglected the commanders of the other two divisions.

Justin Morrill, who was the great guiding light behind the land-grant system, was also on the UVM board of trustees. Probably because of this affiliation, he got the idea that the Vermont Agricultural College should be integrated into that institution, even though this put Vermont out of step with the other New England states, which all started their land-grant colleges from scratch. The university was widely understood to be a thoroughly downhill institution. "Uphill voices expressed their reservations about the plan as early as 1863," [Paul M. Searls] says, and it's clear from events that their doubts had merit. For years, not much happened; the p...

If a poll were taken about Gen. Robert E. Lee's greatest triumph as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, the result undoubtedly would place the Battle of Chancellorsville at or near the top of the list.
Despite a 2-to-1 disadvantage in strength of forces and having been surprised by Gen. Joseph Hooker and the Union Army of the Potomac's aggressive maneuvering, Lee's generalship prevailed in this crucial battle in May 1863. Over the years, historians have chronicled these events in several comprehensive accounts of the battle.

Looking back at the key Statehouse events of 2010: Of course, the pivotal event (and one that will reverberate well into 2011 and beyond) was the death of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, with the myriad ramifications it brought.
In fact, 2010 will probably be remembered as a significant year in state history, like 1863 or 1867, among others.
