  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will launch its online edition of "The William Steinway Diary" in December to coincide with a special display of the diary that will provide a glimpse into the famous piano manufacturer's life and one of the most dynamic periods in American history. "A Gateway to the 19th Century: The William Steinway Diary, 1861-1896" will be on view in the Albert H. Small Documents Gallery from Dec. 17 through April 8, 2011. Steinway (1835-1896), a prominent German American and astute entrepreneur, documented more than 36 years of his life through near- daily notes in nine volumes and some 2,500 pages, beginning eight days after the first shots of the Civil War were fired and three days before hi...

  • News illustrations and editorial cartoons in Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, the two major illustrated news weeklies of the time, have been credited with directly aiding Civil War enlistment efforts in the North. This article uses illustrations and editorial cartoons published from 1861 to 1864 in both weeklies to demonstrate that while they supported voluntary enlistments and bounties, Harper's supported the Civil War draft while Leslie's did not. The difference in editorial positions regarding the draft was heightened by coverage of the draft riots in 1863. Harper's played down the riots and limited coverage primarily to a two-page spread depicting ape-like, Irish rioters committing acts of violence. Leslie's carried considerably more coverage, depicting less...

The president's proposal will also be allocated to those who receive veteran's benefits, retired public employees and railroad retirees. A group of town houses in Manhattan associated with the Underground Railroad and the Civil War draft riots in 1863 have been recognized by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The commission voted unanimously last week to designate the houses on West 29th Street, where abolitionists met, as landmarks, along with a stop on the Underground Railroad at 339 West 29th Street as well. It is a day of no shopping, no school and no traveling for conscious Black people," said [Jitu Weusi]. "People are u...

  • Rioting is criminal behavior, and it was especially criminal because the people whose stores were rioted were also poor," said [Ed Koch]. The conclusion of a Ford Foundation report that cited poverty as a major factor is one he still dismisses. "That's why people broke into liquor stores? Because they're oppressed? I don't think so. "We weren't talking to each like we did in the '60s," said activist Jitu Weusi. "But one misconception is about who riots in this country. In 1863, there was a 'Draft Riot' when Irish men went into the Black community in New York and burned, lynched and savaged for weeks. Any knowledge we have of rioting is after being the victims of it for over a hundred years." "After all the development, we've begun to focus on the marketing of the South Bronx as a comm...

  • IN 1941, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor ended American isolationism and brought our country into a global war that resulted in a colossal rebuilding effort and a long, postwar conflict with the Soviet Union. The 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon also demolished illusions of isolation, and, once again, the U.S. has shown resilience, despite external assault and some self-inflicted errors.

"We are here because the owner is essentially trying to deface and alter and destroy the historic value of that building, and we want that stopped. "This is such an important house and such an important block for New York City's history," said Fern Luskin. "It ought to be a tourist destination, but instead, it is an illegal, unsafe eyesore. Both the fifth story and the scaffolding must come down." "The city is behaving schizophrenically about this," he said.
