Much of Roslyn's charming village center is on the National Register of Historic Places. There's the Roslyn Clock Tower, built in 1895; the Roslyn Grist Mill, which dates to the early 1700s; George Washington Manor, a former residence, now a restaurant and caterer, that hosted George in 1790; and the Bryant Library, the oldest continuing library in Long Island.
Greater Roslyn includes the villages of Roslyn Estates, Roslyn Harbor and East Hills, the unincorporated area of Roslyn Heights and part of the village of Flower Hill. Much of the area is within the Roslyn school district. Students in some sections attend East Williston/Wheatley, North Shore or Mineola schools.

Most of us wonder, upon hearing the name Ho-Ho-Kus, where it comes from. The Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus Web site lists a number of possible sources, both Indian and Dutch, most of them referring to trees, rocks or water. The most poetic of these is "'hohokes,' signifying the whistle of the wind against the bark of trees." Regarding the hyphens and capitalization, still more theories are advanced, notably the effort to avoid confusing postal clerks who once misdirected mail to Hoboken.
The Web site proclaims, "Today every man, woman and child in this historic town is proud to live in a community whose spelling is not duplicated anywhere on earth.
