REDLANDS - The 72nd annual Lincoln Pilgrimage was held under mostly sunny skies Saturday after two years of indoor festivities due to rain.
This year we're blessed with good weather," said Lincoln Memorial Shrine curator Don McCue.

In 1855, in a letter to a young man seeking guidance on how to become a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln advised "get the books, and read." One wonders whether he would offer the same counsel today in response to the absurdly large number of books published about him over the last few months, climaxing earlier this week with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth on Feb. 12th. In a collective act of madness or hope, American publishers released more than 70 books in anticipation of the Lincoln bicentennial.
Of course it was impossible that all these books could gain attention, reviews or sales. The publishers must have known that. And yet they pressed forward, spitting out Lincoln titles at a promiscuous pace. Many books - which in a quieter time might have gotten reviews and read...

Newly named LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson told reporters on Monday there will be no abrupt change in the faith's initiatives or outreach throughout the world, and the church will continue to work cooperatively with people of other faiths.
President Monson was announced as 16th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a morning press conference at the Church Office Building, a move widely anticipated by Latter- day Saints after the death of President Gordon B. Hinckley on Jan. 27.

REDLANDS - Abraham Lincoln's birthday is coming up on Feb. 12, and as they do every year, Redlands history buffs are planning several events in his honor.
This year, though, marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, and the Lincoln Memorial Shrine will play an important role in the historical reflection of the war and its relevance to society today.

Diamond Head, outrigger canoes, Waikiki Beach - all are icons synonymous with the 50th state. Yet just a half-hour west of downtown Honolulu and not too far from another American icon, Pearl Harbor, in Ewa (Eva) Beach, one can find a bronzed, rippled, wide- shouldered, brawny and broad-chested figure, another American icon, cut from the Illinois prairie rather than the Banzai Pipeline of the North Shore - Abraham Lincoln.
Thanks to a dedicated educator, Lincoln has a special home in the Aloha State, a place that brings him garlands of leis every Feb. 12. "Lincoln the Frontiersman," the work of prodigious American public sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks, has graced the entrance plaza to Ewa Elementary School since 1944 and is the school's beloved mascot.
