Almost anything is insurable in the UK. Three long-time British products finally are starting to make headway in the US: pet insurance, wedding insurance and critical illness coverage. The UK marketplace is fundamentally an eccentric marketplace, said Donald R. Jackson, chairman of JCG Group Ltd. It originated from the projected costs of restoring historical properties across Europe to their original quality. The share of companies planning initial staff cuts in the next 12 months fell to 5 percent in April from 13 percent in February, according to a report by Watson Wyatt Worldwide Inc., an Arlington, Va.-based workforce consulting firm. Seventy-two percent of the 141 employers surveyed have already trimmed their workforces, up from 52 percent two months earlier.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wild ducks in Pennsylvania have tested positive for bird flu, but not the deadly Asian strain that has ravaged poultry and killed at least 141 people worldwide, the Agriculture Department said Saturday.
The mallards, which were sampled Aug. 28 in Crawford County, Pa., showed no signs of sickness -- another indication that they were not exposed to the virulent Asian H5N1 strain.
