When Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain take the stage for the presidential debates, attentive viewers may notice both candidates scribbling notes with their left hands. Political junkies will remember that such a curiosity has occurred before: In 1992, all three contenders -- George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot -- were southpaws.
In the race for the White House, lefties seem to have the upper hand. No matter who wins in November, six of the 12 chief executives since the end of World War II will have been left-handed: Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, the elder Bush, Clinton and either Obama or McCain. That's a disproportionate number, considering that only one in 10 people in the general population is left-handed.

BRUSSELS/ATHENS (Reuters) - Euro zone countries will ask banks to accept losses of up to 50 percent on their holdings of Greek debt, officials said on Wednesday [Oct. 12], as part of a grand plan to avert a disorderly default and try to end a crisis that threatens the world economy.
Ahead of a make-or-break summit of European leaders on Oct. 23 at which a comprehensive new Franco-German crisis plan is expected to be discussed, four euro zone officials told Reuters that a "haircut" of between 30 and 50 percent for Greece's private creditors was under consideration.

[...] that challenges the age-old distinction between theory and praxis, Levinas asserts that philosophy answers to a more fundamental ethical exigency which all humans undergo, "practically," all the time. [...] through bringing the later ethico-political philosophy of Albert Camus in The Rebel into an engagement with the more widely known ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, I will contest the lasting silence concerning Camus's political philosophy in philosophical literature.1 Secondly, I argue that Camus's account of political subjectivity in L'Homme Revolte decisively anticipates that later expounded by Levinas.

According to Deleuze, Nietzsche's eternal return is a criterion of selection for active and reactive forces. The sign of the eternal return would be an intensification of the lived experience of the finite being thinking it, without allowing this finite being to escape the fundamental tension between lived identity and difference. [...] this intensifying thought-sign emerges as an experience of the possibility and challenge of affirmation for a being that, as Kundera has shown us, does not return, but happens only once.49 Misericordia University, Dallas, PA 18612
