Last year Sufjan [Stevens] made a record called Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State, and it beat Nick Cave and Stephen Malkmus and Paul Westerberg in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll and sent him sailing straight into the arms of Rough Trade Records. That's a lot of high-profile hoopla for a record that's essentially a chronicle of economic and emotional poverty. Stevens' chief gift is his ability to tell specific stories in a way that makes them seem universal. The slow maternal abandonment that occurs in "Romulus" may be particular to Stevens' childhood, but he manages by the end to boil out the details until all that remains is raw longing and displaced shame. In the setting, Stevens is forced to perform a similar distillation with the physical structur...

A monthly night of instrumental hip-hop is a terrific concept, but like anything, it's all in the execution. Someone without real knowledge of the scene, for example, might just throw on some RJD2 and Peanut Butter Wolf in between DJ Shadow and consider the mission accomplished. Good thing the Perfect Beat comes courtesy of Lil' Dave, a WKDU radio show host and a member of Philly's famed IIIVibe Collective. At his new night's inaugural edition last month, a slew of local MCs and producers stopped by to hear him throw down a wide range of wordless wonders, from the occasional instrumental track on a regular hip-hop album to instrumental versions on 12-inch singles to tracks from DJ-designed instrumental albums. This month's edition will double as a listening party for frequent Madlib col...

Hark! That loud slithering sound is the noise made by a thousand baby-boomer rock critics sliding their vile yellow tongues up [Bob Dylan]'s anchovian ringpiece. Enough already! The guy's dead--leave him be! Instead refresh your shell-likes with [Jonathan Richman]--the Zen social-surrealist Pee-wee Herman/Mister Rogers/Barney of punk rock. It'll be like eating a ton of rich marzipan-swathed Battenburg cake and drinking gallons of fizzy pop--on industrial-strength crack. Miles more fun than watching the twitching zombie spokesperson for somebody else's generation. And there won't be hordes of balding potbellied 55-year-old anal-retentive virgins stinking out the first 24 rows either. Result! (Steven Wells)

Atlantiquity is a new 12-track compilation of remixed disco and soul classics from the Atlantic label, produced by L.A.-based [DJ Garth Trinidad]. (2004) (Shown on film): Proving that Joseph Goebbels' promise-"In a hundred years' time they'll be showing a fine color film of the terrible days we are living through"-was 40 years off, Germany's first full-length narrative film about Hitler focuses on his final days, as both the bunker and Nazism crumble around him. Partly an adaptation of Traudl Junge's vivid recounting in Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary, the film boasts an Altmanesque spread, but also a nagqingly schizophrenic vibe. Director Oliver Hirschbiegel frequently captures a patently European brand of dark comedy as the Nazi ideal crumbles more quickly than the bunker, only to pull back into more typical spoon-feeding territory. It's always absorbing and often mind-bending, but the film really needed someone like Emir Kusturi...

Free's plotting the murder of someone who's wronged him. He's getting antsy. A trial is coming up, and he's worried his mark will take him down from the witness stand. Free'll have to make his move, and soon, or, as he puts it, "Homicide him with a rifle/ Make sure the job is done before he be rattin' like Fievel.
How. When Freeway isn't pounding you lyrically, he's mauling you with his delivery. He draws out some words, chops others short. He sucks air. even while extending verscs long enough to give the impression that he doesn't need to breathe. He's quick. He's slow. At times, he's both in the same bar: lyrical gymnastics. He wields "one of hip-hop's truly distinctive voices," according to Rolling Stone.

Even if there's only one of him, Four Tet boasts plenty of backup. Kieran Hebden's somewhat left-field take on computer-generated music has called folk icons and free jazz greats out from their dusty-sleeved, popping vinyl retirement to craft a wholly new kind of people's music--schooled, informed, reverent but never crippled by nostalgia or frigid technology. Joining Hebden is Koushik and England's Hot Chip, recent signees to New York's DFA Records. (Mike McKee)

(1955) (Shown on film): Henri-George Clouzot followed up possibly the most suspenseful film of all time (Wages of Fear) with the only thriller that out-Hitchcocked Hitchcock. (Sir Alfred would subsequently hire the film's writers to pen the book that became Vertigo.) Clouzot's wife Véra (boring) and Simone Signoret (decidedly not boring) play wife and mistress to the man they've decided to murder. The disappearance of his corpse is the first and least maddening twist. Fitting its director, who was once banned from his craft for being too misanthropic (by way of 1943's Le Corbeau), the film is sour and unrepentantly bleak, though it did, via Charles Vanel's rascally inspector, help create Colombo.
